Up until a few weeks ago, I had no idea what I was missing out on. If you haven’t ever heard of them before, please do yourself a massive favor and check them out immediately.
I hadn’t been to church in a few weeks, perhaps out of laziness or maybe the winter blues that tend to strike me after the holidays, but I decided to get up and give it a go the last Sunday of January. I am immensely grateful I did or my life may have continued to be deprived of the beautifulness that is Sassfolk.
As I sat alone on my perch that is the upper balcony, I watched the two lovely women glide onto the stage, having no idea what to expect. They joked and laughed with the audience, and I immediately felt a kinship with them, a gentle ease that they permeated into the chapel.
Then, they started to sing. My heart stopped and somehow grew at the same time. They glowed brighter with each chord strummed and lyric cantillated throughout the sanctuary. Hyper focused on the stage, I inched towards the edge of my seat, swaying in the gloriousness of their sweet vocalizations of thoughts I had recently found myself mired in. How is that two souls I had never even known existed up until that moment, so deeply knew the very essence of who I am? It was almost as if my cells felt alive and invigorated within the energy that they put out. We were asked to join our voices with them, and as I belted out the simple, yet powerful lyrics, it felt as if my soul was being embraced by every soul present in the room. It was then I pondered, if this isn’t the very definition of love, of God, in this present moment, I’m not sure what is.
It has been said that music is the proof of the divine’s existence, and let me tell you, the room was exploding with it that morning. In Blake K. Healy’s book series, in which he details his vision of the spiritual world, he describes how when people sing of the divine, angels dance all around in joy and praise. I can only put into so many words what that moment in time on that day felt like, but this vision closely captures it.
Needless to say, if you get a chance, check this lovely band out. Even better, if you can see them in person, go do so!
